Adrenal Fatigue Treatment at Bliss MD in Brief

The adrenal fatigue treatment Chicago patients receive at Bliss MD starts with a simple idea: optimization, not just “normal.” Many people feel drained, wired at night and foggy by mid-afternoon, yet are told their labs look fine. Dr. Anand Thakkar, MD, a Fellow of the American Academy of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine with 15 years of experience, looks at how your stress hormones actually behave across the day. He measures cortisol and DHEA, rules out medical conditions, and builds a root-cause plan for stress adaptation, sleep, nutrition and hormone balance, aimed at long-term rejuvenation rather than a quick fix.

A note on terms: “Adrenal fatigue” is a popular phrase, not a recognized medical diagnosis. We use it because it describes how many patients feel. Our job is to find out what is really driving those symptoms, which may include a disrupted cortisol rhythm (often called HPA-axis dysregulation), thyroid or sex-hormone imbalance, sleep problems or nutrient gaps. True adrenal disorders such as Addison’s disease or Cushing’s syndrome are screened for and, when suspected, referred for specialist care.

Signs Your Stress Hormones May Be Out of Balance

  • Waking up tired even after a full night’s sleep
  • An afternoon energy crash, or needing caffeine to get going
  • Feeling “tired but wired” at bedtime, or waking at 2–4 a.m.
  • Brain fog, poor focus or lower motivation
  • Feeling overwhelmed by stress you used to handle easily
  • Salt or sugar cravings, or lightheadedness when standing up
  • Lower libido, irritability or low mood
  • Slower recovery from workouts, illness or travel

These symptoms overlap with many conditions, so testing matters more than guessing.

Who This Is For

  • Busy professionals and parents running on caffeine and adrenaline
  • Adults in their 30s, 40s and 50s whose energy and resilience have slipped
  • People going through a long stretch of work, caregiving or emotional stress
  • Anyone told their labs are “normal” who still doesn’t feel like themselves

Step 1: Cortisol and DHEA Testing

Your cortisol testing in Chicago is chosen to fit your symptoms:

  • 4-point salivary cortisol. Four samples collected at home (morning, noon, afternoon and night) map your daily cortisol curve. It shows whether cortisol rises and falls the way it should, not just a single snapshot.
  • Serum (blood) cortisol. A morning blood test, and further testing when needed, to screen for adrenal disorders that need medical treatment.
  • DHEA-S. DHEA is the adrenal hormone that works alongside cortisol. Its level gives a fuller picture of adrenal output and resilience.
  • Related labs. A full thyroid panel, sex hormones, blood sugar and insulin, iron and ferritin, vitamin D, B12 and inflammation markers, because these often explain or worsen fatigue.

Dr. Thakkar reviews every result with you and explains what it means for your plan.

Step 2: A Root-Cause Plan for Adrenal Hormone Optimization

There is no one-size-fits-all protocol. Your plan may include:

  • Stress adaptation. Practical tools such as breathwork, mindfulness, boundaries and recovery days to help your nervous system shift out of constant “fight or flight.”
  • Sleep. Restoring a healthy sleep-wake rhythm with light exposure, a consistent schedule and sleep hygiene, and checking for sleep apnea when indicated.
  • Nutrition and lifestyle. Balanced blood sugar, enough protein, smart caffeine and alcohol timing, and exercise matched to your recovery, not more stress on top of it.
  • Adaptogens and nutrients. When appropriate, evidence-informed supplements such as ashwagandha, rhodiola, magnesium, vitamin C or B vitamins, chosen and dosed for you and checked for interactions.
  • Hormone support. If testing shows a true deficiency or imbalance, Dr. Thakkar may discuss DHEA or other hormone optimization, including thyroid or sex hormones, with careful monitoring.

Step 3: Retest and Refine

Stress hormones respond to change over weeks to months. We follow up, repeat testing when useful, and adjust your plan so you can see real progress over time. Results vary from person to person.

Adrenal Fatigue and Cortisol FAQs

Is adrenal fatigue a real diagnosis?

“Adrenal fatigue” is not a recognized medical diagnosis, but the symptoms people describe are real. At Bliss MD we test cortisol, DHEA and related hormones to find the actual causes, such as a disrupted cortisol rhythm, thyroid imbalance or poor sleep, and screen for true adrenal disorders.

What is a 4-point salivary cortisol test?

It is an at-home test where you collect saliva four times in one day: morning, midday, afternoon and night. The results show your daily cortisol curve, so we can see whether cortisol is high, low or mistimed at different points in the day.

Should I test cortisol with saliva or blood?

Each has a role. Salivary testing maps your daily rhythm, while a morning serum (blood) cortisol is the standard screen for medical adrenal conditions. Dr. Thakkar recommends the right test based on your symptoms and history.

Why test DHEA along with cortisol?

DHEA is made by the adrenal glands alongside cortisol. Looking at both gives a more complete picture of how your adrenals are handling stress, and it helps guide whether hormone support makes sense.

Do adaptogens like ashwagandha help with stress and cortisol?

Some studies suggest adaptogens such as ashwagandha and rhodiola may help with stress and sleep, but they are not right for everyone and can interact with medications or thyroid conditions. We recommend them only when they fit your results and health history.

How long does it take to feel better?

It varies. Many patients work on sleep, stress and nutrition for several weeks to a few months before retesting. We track your progress and adjust the plan along the way.
