Physician-led since 2011 · Board certified in Internal Medicine (ABIM) · Lab-guided TRT in Lincoln Park and Hanover Park

Bliss MD offers physician-led testosterone replacement therapy Chicago men can start with a free 15-minute discovery call. Low energy, a fading sex drive, stubborn belly fat or a flat mood? Low testosterone may be part of the picture, but it’s rarely the whole story.

Dr. Anand Thakkar confirms low T with lab tests, looks for the cause, then builds a TRT plan around your results. We see men at our Lincoln Park clinic in Chicago and our Schaumburg-area clinic in Hanover Park.

Normal isn’t the goal. Optimal is.

A “normal” lab result and an optimal testosterone level are not the same thing. Dr. Thakkar doesn’t want you to settle for a normal life. He wants you to have an exceptional one. Every testosterone replacement therapy Chicago plan uses individualized dosing that aims for the effects you want while minimizing side effects. See how normal and optimal differ.

What We Offer: Testosterone Replacement Therapy Chicago Care

Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) raises testosterone to a healthy range in men whose bodies no longer make enough. It’s a prescription treatment, so it starts with a diagnosis, not a guess.

Hormones work as a team, so one number rarely tells the whole story. Every testosterone replacement therapy Chicago evaluation at Bliss MD looks at:

  • Testosterone, total and free
  • Estradiol (estrogen)
  • DHEA and cortisol
  • Thyroid, with a full panel
  • Growth hormone markers (IGF-1)
  • PSA, for prostate health
  • CBC, including hematocrit (your red blood cell level)

From there, Dr. Thakkar may recommend TRT, treat another cause first, or pair hormones with sleep, weight and stress changes. Not sure your symptoms are hormonal? Start with our guide to low testosterone symptoms.

Why Choose Bliss MD as Your TRT Clinic in Chicago?

Comparing a TRT clinic Chicago offers with one closer to home? Most men who search “testosterone clinic near me” or “TRT clinic near me” want two things: a real physician and a plan that fits their life. Dr. Thakkar founded Bliss MD and oversees testosterone replacement therapy Chicago care at both locations.

  • Physician-led since 2011: a medical doctor sets and reviews your plan.
  • Board certification: Internal Medicine (ABIM), plus certification in anti-aging and regenerative medicine (A4M/ABAARM).
  • Whole-person care: hormones, weight, sleep, stress and sexual health in one place.
  • Two clinics: Lincoln Park in Chicago and Hanover Park, near Schaumburg.
  • Labs on-site: blood draws anytime during clinic hours.
  • Optimal, not just normal: individualized dosing with compounded pellets, compounded cream or compounded subcutaneous injections, at both clinics.

Whether you start TRT Chicago-side in Lincoln Park or in the suburbs, you get the same physician and the same approach. We don’t use a one-size protocol. Your dose and delivery method are based on your labs, symptoms and goals, then adjusted at each follow-up.

Low T Treatment Chicago: Symptoms and Levels That Qualify

Testosterone falls slowly with age. It can drop faster with weight gain, poor sleep, some medicines and chronic illness. Common signs include:

  • Low sex drive or fewer morning erections
  • Fatigue and low motivation
  • Loss of muscle and strength
  • More belly fat
  • Low mood, irritability or poor focus

Symptoms alone don’t confirm low T, so every testosterone replacement therapy Chicago plan starts with labs. The American Urological Association uses a total testosterone below about 300 ng/dL, measured on two separate early-morning blood tests, plus symptoms. The Endocrine Society guideline also calls for repeat morning testing.

Men over 40 often ask what level qualifies for TRT. The answer depends on your numbers, your symptoms and the cause. When fertility or the cause of low T is in question, the panel may include LH and FSH, the brain signals that tell the testes to make testosterone. Low T can affect erections, too. Learn how low testosterone and ED connect.

Normal vs. Optimal Testosterone: Why "Normal" Isn't the Goal

“Normal” and “optimal” sound alike, but on a lab report they mean very different things. The normal range for testosterone is wide. It’s based on a broad group of men of many ages and health levels. You can sit inside that range and still feel tired, flat and not like yourself.

Dr. Thakkar doesn’t want you to settle for a normal life. He wants you to have an exceptional one. So instead of stopping at “your number is normal,” we ask a better question: at what level do you feel and function your best? Every testosterone replacement therapy Chicago plan we build starts there.

  • Individualized dosing: your dose, form and timing are matched to your labs, symptoms and goals.
  • Aim for the effects you want: energy, drive, mood, focus and strength.
  • Minimize side effects: we track hematocrit, estradiol, PSA and blood pressure, and adjust when a number moves.
  • Optimal isn’t “as high as possible”: more testosterone isn’t better. We look for the level where you feel well and your safety labs stay in range.

This is the core of our testosterone replacement therapy Chicago approach. Compounded options help, because they let us fine-tune a dose when standard strengths don’t fit. Results vary from man to man.

Testosterone Testing Near Me: Labs at Both Clinics

Good testosterone replacement therapy Chicago care starts with good data. We draw labs anytime during clinic hours at both clinics, so testing fits your schedule. Testosterone peaks in the morning, so morning draws give the most accurate result.

Your first panel sets a baseline. After you start treatment, we repeat key labs to keep you in a healthy range:

  • Testosterone, to fine-tune your dose
  • Estradiol, since some testosterone turns into estrogen
  • Hematocrit, because TRT can thicken the blood
  • PSA, to watch prostate health

We review every result with you in plain language.

Bioidentical Testosterone: Personalized, Lab-Guided Dosing

The testosterone in prescription injections, gels, creams and pellets is bioidentical. It has the same structure as the testosterone your body makes. Many commercial products are FDA-approved, and they come in set strengths.

Dr. Thakkar prefers individualized dosing. When set strengths don’t fit your labs and goals, he uses compounded preparations from a licensed compounding pharmacy:

  • Compounded testosterone pellets, which use cholesterol as the filler and include an estrogen blocker only when your labs call for it
  • Compounded testosterone cream, made in the strength your labs call for
  • Subcutaneous testosterone injections in medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil, which are compounded only

Compounded products are not FDA-approved, and we always tell you which kind you’re getting. For some patients, we also offer traditional intramuscular injections. Either way, your testosterone replacement therapy Chicago plan starts carefully and is adjusted as your labs change.

Testosterone Injections, Pellets and Creams

Your testosterone replacement therapy Chicago plan can use one of three delivery methods, all available at both of our clinics, Lincoln Park and Hanover Park. We match the method to your labs, lifestyle and preferences.

OptionHow oftenGood to know
Compounded subcutaneous injections (MCT oil)Twice a week, at homeA small shot just under the skin, not into the muscle; easy to adjust
Compounded pelletsEvery few months, depending on your labsPlaced under the skin in the office; can’t be removed once placed
Compounded creamDaily, applied to the scrotumStrength adjusted to your labs; keep treated skin away from women and children

Testosterone Injections Near Me: Under the Skin, Twice a Week

Traditional testosterone injections are oil-based, usually in cottonseed or grapeseed oil, and go into the muscle. Many men find them harder to give. Levels also rise after each shot and fall before the next one, and some men feel those ups and downs. That’s one reason some patients prefer pellets.

We now offer subcutaneous testosterone injections in medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil, not grapeseed, canola or cottonseed oil. These MCT-oil injections are compounded only. You give a small shot just under the skin twice a week. Smaller, more frequent doses aim to keep your levels steadier.

If you’ve been searching for testosterone injections near me, either office can start you and show you how. For some patients, we also offer traditional intramuscular injections.

Illustrative chart comparing testosterone levels over four weeks in five panels: traditional injections every 1–2 weeks rise and fall in big ups and downs, commercial 1.62% gel stays in the normal lab range, twice-weekly subcutaneous MCT-oil injections are more stable in the optimal range, Bliss MD compounded cream reaches the optimal range, and compounded pellets stay steadiest in the optimal range.
Illustrative only. Individual levels vary.

Compounded Testosterone Pellets for Men

We use compounded testosterone pellets from a licensed compounding pharmacy. Compounding lets us add an estrogen blocker, only when your labs call for it. It also lets us use cholesterol as the filler, to help your body accept the pellet.

Many testosterone replacement therapy Chicago patients choose pellets for fewer appointments. In our experience, rates of pellet extrusion and infection are very low at our clinics. Read more about testosterone pellets for men at Bliss MD.

Compounded Testosterone Cream

Our compounded cream is applied to the scrotum, where the skin absorbs testosterone well. A common commercial gel comes in a 1.62% strength. Ours is compounded, so we can adjust the strength to reach your optimal level, for example 5%, 10% or up to 20%. Let it dry, wash your hands and keep treated skin away from partners and children.

If You Want to Protect Fertility

Testosterone therapy can lower sperm production, sometimes to zero. If you may want children, tell us first. A physician may discuss options that support your body’s own testosterone, such as enclomiphene or hCG. Some are used off-label, and none is right for everyone.

Beyond Testosterone: Whole-Person Men's Health

Testosterone is one piece of men’s hormone replacement therapy, not the whole plan. Low T often travels with weight gain, poor sleep, stress and alcohol. Treating those can lift energy and, in some men, testosterone itself. That’s why our testosterone replacement therapy Chicago program looks at your whole life.

Weight, Sleep, Alcohol and Exercise

We help with weight loss, sleep habits, cutting back on alcohol and a realistic exercise plan. These steps support your results on TRT, and for some men they’re enough on their own.

Peptides and Mood Support

Some men are candidates for peptide therapy, which we discuss case by case. Anxiety and low mood can look a lot like low T, so we offer support for those as well.

ED Care at Both Clinics

Low testosterone and erection problems often overlap. Both clinics offer ED care, including shockwave therapy, the P-Shot and exosome-based treatments. Ask us which options are FDA-cleared and which are still being studied. Compare the P-Shot, shockwave and ED medication, or read about regenerative ED treatment.

Is Testosterone Replacement Therapy Chicago Care Right for You?

TRT May Suit You If You…

  • Have symptoms such as low desire, fatigue or lost strength that affect daily life
  • Have low testosterone confirmed on two morning blood tests
  • Want a physician-led plan with regular labs, not a fixed protocol
  • Are already on TRT elsewhere and want a second opinion

When to See a Doctor

Book a testosterone replacement therapy Chicago visit if symptoms last more than a few months. Testing also makes sense if you have type 2 diabetes, obesity, sleep apnea or long-term opioid or steroid use. Get urgent care for chest pain, trouble breathing, one-sided leg swelling or sudden weakness, whether or not you’re on TRT.

TRT Safety: Monitoring, Side Effects and Who Shouldn't Use It

TRT is a long-term medical treatment, so monitoring isn’t optional. Every testosterone replacement therapy Chicago plan at Bliss MD includes regular checks.

What We Monitor

  • Testosterone: we aim for your optimal level, not the highest possible number.
  • Hematocrit: testosterone can raise red blood cells. The Endocrine Society advises pausing treatment if hematocrit rises above 54%.
  • PSA: to watch prostate health.
  • Estradiol: high levels can cause breast tenderness or fluid retention.
  • Blood pressure: testosterone labels now warn that it can rise.

Possible Side Effects

  • Acne or oily skin
  • Breast tenderness or swelling
  • Ankle swelling
  • Worse sleep apnea
  • Smaller testes and a lower sperm count
  • With pellets: soreness or bruising, and less often infection or a pellet working its way out

TRT May Not Be Right If You…

  • Have prostate or breast cancer
  • Are trying to father a child soon
  • Have a high hematocrit, untreated severe sleep apnea or uncontrolled heart failure
  • Had a heart attack or stroke in the last 6 months

What the FDA’s 2025 Testosterone Label Update Says

In February 2025, the FDA asked makers of all testosterone products to add results of the TRAVERSE trial to their labels. That large study found no rise in major heart events with testosterone gel compared with placebo in men with low T. It did find somewhat more atrial fibrillation, kidney injury and lung clots. The FDA removed boxed-warning language about heart risk and added a blood pressure warning. For testosterone replacement therapy Chicago patients, our screening hasn’t changed. Dr. Thakkar still reviews your heart, clot and prostate history before any prescription. For the full evidence, read is TRT safe.

Neither is better for everyone. Our compounded subcutaneous injections are given twice a week at home and are easy to adjust, and for some patients we also offer traditional intramuscular injections. Traditional oil-based injections make levels rise and fall, which is one reason some men prefer pellets. Pellets commonly last a few months, depending on your labs, but can’t be removed once placed. We’ll help you choose based on your labs and lifestyle. Compare testosterone pellets vs injections.
TRT has real benefits and real risks. In a large trial of men with low T, it didn’t raise the rate of major heart events. Risks include a higher red blood cell count, higher blood pressure, lower fertility and acne. We check your labs and blood pressure on a set schedule. Read more: is TRT safe?

Yes. For testosterone replacement therapy Chicago patients, we use compounded testosterone pellets and compounded testosterone cream from a licensed compounding pharmacy, so the strength can be matched to your labs. Our subcutaneous MCT-oil injections are compounded too, and all three are available at both clinics. Compounded products are not FDA-approved. We’ll explain every option, including FDA-approved products, at your visit.

Guidelines, including the AUA’s, use a total testosterone below about 300 ng/dL on two morning tests, plus symptoms. A borderline result may call for more testing, such as free testosterone.

The normal lab range is wide and based on a broad group of men, so you can be “normal” and still have symptoms. In our testosterone replacement therapy Chicago program, we aim for your optimal level: the point where you feel and function your best, using individualized dosing that minimizes side effects. Optimal doesn’t mean as high as possible.

Many men notice better desire and energy within a few weeks. Changes in mood, muscle and body fat usually take a few months. Results vary from person to person.

Yes, but plan it with your doctor. Your body’s own testosterone can take months to recover, and symptoms may return. If you want to stop, we’ll build a plan and track your labs.

It can. Testosterone therapy can lower sperm production, sometimes to zero. If you may want children, tell us before you start so we can discuss other options.
